Yesterday my company arranged a special motivational talk for those who are paying for the company parking lot @ RM50 a month. Since my works usually starts to be hectic in the afternoon, why not spend some time listening to this trainer’s Talk Kok! in the morning.
What makes me to write about this talk after all? Reason is this trainer said we were the winners of today, the losers are those never have a chance to participate in this talk. As usual, I like helping & seeing ppl happy thus decided to share with you what i have learnt yesterday.
Well, allow me to tell you briefly abt this trainer. He is based in KL, his name is Heera Singh, who was born in Melaka, had his tertiary education done in overseas & had worked for UN for a couple of yrs under Kofi Annan (former UN Secretary). He is good in squash,in fact was the former Melaka State player in the 80′ if not mistaken. He is articulate, well traveled, properly dressed & jovial all the time. The title of today talk is called The Power of A Positive Attitude! The talk lasted abt 2&1/2 hr.

I aint going to tell u everything he said to us in this blog except some notable references and talk kok that impressed me somehow. By the way, he did perform some good magic as he delve further in his talk.
First, he was telling us that Kofi Annan is a nice boss. How nice? Supposedly Annan feels that his subordinate report is not up to his expectation, he will convey the msg as follows:
Annan will summon Heera to his office and greet him as usual by standing up. Then, he will ask Heera to sit beside him and review the report together. Right away, Annan will say this to heera. “Heera, I have reviewed your report just now and frankly speaking this is not your usual excellent work. I am expecting something better. I have marked down which area need correction, could you kindly review it and redo the portion. It will be fine if you could submit the report by tomorrow.”
Heera said this way of talking will surely make us work harder in order not to disappoint our boss since the boss was being polite and respectful in the feedback. Then, he quoted the extreme opposite way of some other bosses reaction to the similar dissatisfaction:
Hey, Heera, u gila kah? what shit r u giving me here? i ask u to do according to my way but u give me this talkkok ver. How can u be this stupid??? Pls correct it and send to me ASAP. If not finish, don’t go home…..@#$%^&*(
This way, according to Heera will surely get him pissed off with his boss thus causing him doing the correction half heartedly or unwillingly.
Lesson 1 from Heera: Politeness is to b observed always and important. But when giving instructions to subordinate, pls state clearly what you want, when u need, and your specific criteria. Be specific as much as possible. Do not give uncountable /vague instructions like ASAP, see what can u do, etc….cuz ur employee will not have same expectations as u.
Next, Heera showed us this photo:

wilma_rudolph
Who is Wilma Rudolph?
- She had polio since young but her achievements were outstanding if not miraculous.
- She was first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single Olympic (NOT Paralympic) Games in 1960.
- She emerged from the 1960 Rome Olympics as “The Tornado,” the fastest woman on earth. The Italians nicknamed her “La Gazzella Nera” (the Black Gazelle); to the French she was “La Perle Noire” (The Black Pearl).
Reason of her overwhelming success ,according to heera, was attributed to Wilma’s mother. When she was young and saw in the newspaper that althetic won trophy for their run, she told her mom that she aspired to become a champion one day in the track field. THe mother then replied to Wilma who was still not able to walk due to her polio: If You have the determination and work hard for your objectives, I am sure you can make it one day.A simple reply yet brought a permanent change (a good one) to a little child.
Heera said if we were the mother of Wilma, what would we tell her? “Wilma, don’t waste time, just focus and cont learning on how to walk if good enough for u”. Another simple reply yet for sure will bring the damaging side to the child.
Lesson 2: Never bring the reality to your children too soon, expose them to trials with proper guidance & encouragement.
Next reference:
Paul Potts
- Winner of the first series of ITV‘s Britain’s Got Talent, singing an operatic aria, “Nessun Dorma” from Turandot.
- Before he sang in the competition, he himself confessed to the judges (one of them is Simon Cowell) that his biggest weakness is no confidence in himself.
- See the difference made by self confidence (which i have abundantly)

Before he won the show! double chin exposed, look no confident!

Paul Potts of today! double chin also hilang...
Lesson 3: Confidence in oneself will drive u to success!
We had a short break for 5 mins in the mid of the talk. The participants were back from the break punctually , surprisingly!
After break, the very next reference is this Hero:

Terry the FOx
Terrance Stanley “Terry” Fox, was a Canadian athlete, and cancer treatment activist. He became famous for the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, which Fox ran with one prosthetic leg. He is considered one of Canada’s greatest heroes of the 20th century and is celebrated internationally every September as people participate in the Terry Fox Run, the world’s largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.
According to Heera, terry ran all 43 marathons and died after the last one, there was silence during the very moment as everybody felt sorry for Terry the Fox runner!
Lesson 4: Dying alone is not scary as of today’s standard. But dying without leaving a legacy (big or small doesn’t matter) is damn scary!!.
see what terry achieved even till today: Respect, Remembrance & Lots of Statues ard his country!!!

memorial statue for terry

Another Statue in ottawa
Last but not least,Heera showed us this movie clip in the finale:
Title: She without arm, he without leg – ballet – Hand in Hand

Guys, hope u learnt something from this talk.
Important : I am not asking u to chop ur leg or hand in order to display ur dancing skills with the hope to leave a legacy in Melaka. This might not work here. Just remember the 4 lessons above.

One comment
I hope with this few lessons given, some top management or bosses can have the lesson learn, I can forgive THEM to be rough n impolite after so many year of education guide for pass many years maybe due to the teacher are not guide them properly, BUT if after attending this TALK KOK session and they are still practice impolite and rough, I believed no 1 can forgive them including himself…………..
