Doga-Yoga for Dog and You!

Yoga has been gaining much attention and followings in last 10 years. Just look at our cities, the learning centers have been mushrooming like tuition centers and the packages offered are truly competitive.

2 years back, I had the chance to join one of the famous Hatha Yogi’s classes in Melaka. This Yogi master interviewed me before agreeing to admitting me. I must say learning Yoga is not that simple as we thought of. My Master doesn’t play any music during her classes and she rebuked those centers which doing so, simply because of our absolute attention must be given during the practices. After few months of hard work, I managed to do few unbelievable postures as follow:

The practice of this holistic Zen postures has gone a further step. Last 2 years, originating from Seattle and Mahattan, a new trend of Yoga practice was introduced to the mass. Yoga for the Canine and Human-aptly called the Doga! How it look like? See following:

Critics have disapproved this mutated practice, citing Doga runs the risk of trivializing yoga by turning a 2,500-year-old practice into a fad while its proponents think it’s pretty adorable and probably therapeutic for either companion.

While it is unsure currently if there’s training certification for teaching Dog Yoga but its appeal has been getting stronger with Japan adopting similar practice now.

So why are people bringing an extra four legs to be on all fours?

One school of thought states following :

“Jobs are disappearing, Mortgage payments are looming. Change is everywhere, but your dog remains steadfast. So, why not spend time together?”

At $15-25 (~RM60) a class, it can be beneficial for the dog, says one Doga master, who caters to doggie needs and provides massage techniques as part of a holistic approach to canine care. This is believed to have improved the digestion and heart function while poses for people that emphasize stress reduction and feeling well.

But honestly, let’s address the real issue here, is Doga for the dogs? Or for the human’s needs?

I am not sure too…but I am looking forward to its introduction in our beloved country since we are bogged down with so many issues lately….Perak’s In & Out, Job loss, higher S&P interests rate,  disappointing economies and so on….probably it will help a little….
