I was there last week…Part I

The idea was started during one of my lunches with RG & QCH. We were talking about how to spend the 2009 Year End holidays then. After much deliberation, we decided to go for a vacation together but unfortunately QCH can’t make it due to other commitments. Our destinations: Macau & Hong Kong!!!

The Itinerary was a compact one, departing on the Dec 28th @ 0630 morning and returning on the Jan 1st @ 2105 evening in order to have 5 full days escapade to these 2 glamorous yet naughty cities!

Macau & Hong Kong

We took an Air Asia flight-AK50 to Macau (the flight ticket price is half the one landing in HK,mind you).

Our departure flight-AK50

Our departure flight-AK50 from LCCT

Boarding the flight...

The space between the seats is miserably small...

Anyway, I can’t complain much as it already says it’s a no -frills airline,as long as it provides me a seat is good enuf! :( ((

The flight took 3 hrs and 45 mins. I ordered Nasi Lemak for my breakfast onboard. Again, I don’t expect sotongs and much chickens in it. True enough, this was what i have:

Air Asia's famous Nasi Lemak selling at RM8....

God blessed, we arrived safely and on time. The flight’s landing was superb, better than some of MAS landings, i thought.

The Macau airport is nothing special, unlike our billion dollar KLIA. BUt then, why need such a big white elephant if there is not enough air passengers.Just look at our airport traffic then you will know what i mean.

Macau_International_Airport

From the airport to our hotel in the Peninsula, we chartered a van via one of hotels counters in the airport at 150 pattaca, pretty cheap compared to the need of using 3 taxis to ferry 9 of us there. the taxis will cost us around 55 Pattaca/car. Hence, if you are going alone or just few of u, it is still better to go by the taxi. Ironically, all major hotels’ free shuttle buses do not take the passengers from the airport but to the airport only. Stupid! !@#$%*

Macau was rather cold on that day. This made us feel hungry! After checking in to the hotel, we hurriedly looked for the 1st meal of the day-Lunch. On the recommendation of a local, we went to try this famous eatery nearby the Senando Square.

We had the 猪扒包 here

Macau is famous for this Pork chop burger (猪扒包), the African chicken, egg tarts as many know. Hence, we definitely need to try these within 24 hrs before we depart to HK the very next day.

This is the 猪扒包:

Other than this burger, we tried the pork chop rice, hong kong fried beef koay tiaw…..

After the lunch, we strolled along Macau city center and came to Senado Square, another famous tourist spot.

The decorated Senado Square

This paved area is located in the centre of the former Portuguese colony of Macau, enclosed by the buildings of the Leal Senado, the General Post Office, and St. Dominic’s Church. The square is paved in the traditional Portuguese pavement. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centre of Macau”.

The General Post Office

The square is jammed packed with locals as well as tourists.

St'Dominic Church

This church has lots of relics on display, this is one of them...

These relics are impressive and in good condition. They are open to public at FOC,altogether there are 3 storeys housing these priceless relics of the Catholic church.

Koi Kei food souvenir shop in Macau

Well, this shop is the most famous food souvenir chain in Macau. Just in Senado area, there are about 6-7 outlets within walking distance. The are many kinda food items offered by this shop:

grilled minced pork with many flavours

Almond cookies...most famous item of this chain

Almond cookies is very famous among the Macaunese

Love letters in the making

And the Portugues tart

Golden yellow baked tart...yummylicious!!

This tart is sold at 6Pattaca per pcs.

Signboards are easily seen in the area to help guide the tourists in finding the attractions.

Next, we were looking for the most recognisable icon of Macau-The Ruins of St Paul:

The iconic structure of Macau-St'Paul Gate

You can see many are taking panoramic photos of this structure,so did we….:

See all of us donning thick sweaters and hands in pockets? It was bloody cold then…..

The Beside the Ruins of St Paul, you can climb up to this fortress too, very much like our St Paul Hill. Plenty of canons are seen on top of this hill.

You can have the bird eye view of the Macau city too from here:

The city---pretty old looking

And you can see lots of century old temples too….Following is the famous temple gave birth to the name of Macau- the A-Ma Temple.

A-Ma Temple

But when we reached there,it was already closed….!@#$%^&*….So we could only take photos from outside:

Another dessert we tried was this:

Egg milk pudding

The plain type

The one with RED bean topping

After this, we went back to our hotel for a short rest and bathing.

The hotel we stayed in

Then, we went out for dinner at 2000.  We had our dinner at a Portuguese restaurant nearby the Senado Square.

The African chicken

We ordered 8 dishes and shared among us. Altogether it cost us about 800 plus Patacca, quite expensive as we thought!

Well, after the delightful dinner, we walked around the city and true as what the book says, Macau is never dull at night! Just look at the casinos shimmering in Neon lights and its impressive building structures.

The Grand Lisboa

Wynn Casino

At about 11.30pm, we finally retired to our cosy hotel room! The 1st day in Macau was really an eye opening experience to all of us about this sin city….Not only gambling is the main attraction, escort services are plentiful too:

this kinda seductive ads leaflet was given in the public...

Now, you understand why i called this city a naughty one…. :)

Next is Hong Kong……TO be continued!!
